One year ago today, on October 2nd 2020, Radio Land Launched to keep irelands radio industry up to date with all the industry news. It’s fitting then that today we recap one of the biggest events in the Irish radio calendar. Last night was the IMRO Radio Awards, and here’s what happened.

The big winners

• Local station of the year went to WLR in Waterford. It’s the third year in a row they took home this award. Congratulations WLR
• Spin 1038 in Dublin was the music station of the year award winner. Congratulations Spin
• The full service station of the year this year is BBC Radio Ulster. Gwan the Beeb

Who else won stuff?

There was a total of 41 awards so who won what? The fine people at Radio Today compiled a handy list so you can take a look here.

Here’s some of the amazing work that was awarded last night

• 98FM in Dublin won the award for best imaging. The stations current package was created by Wisebuddah and you can listen to it here.
• RTE won best podcast with GunPlot. You can listen to that here on apple podcasts.
• Best documentary also went to RTÉ. A Very Irish Coup tells the story of how some very clever Irish people outsmarted the bookies. You can listen to that fantastic show with the Doc On One app.

There was loads of fantastic content awarded last night so go and enjoy it. You won’t be disappointed.

Did other non IMRO stuff happen this week?

Other stuff happened this week too so here’s a quick summary of what went on.

• Irish music month kicked off yesterday. Radio stations will be supporting Irish music more than ever for the next few weeks.
• A complaint was upheld in part against RTÉ. As always there’s a few interesting complaints as well.
• Newstalk is shaking up weekends a little with some schedule changes.

Lots happens in the radio industry each week so here’s a summary of the week we just enjoyed.

Here’s what happened

Beat 102 103 have warned listeners about a fake Beat social media account trying to scam people. It seems this is a new tactic commonly used by scammers when stations are running competitions. I had a recent experience with a Fake 2FM account telling me I won a telly, interesting as the real 2FM was giving away a telly at the time too. Beat was giving away €1,000 but we don’t know if this info was being used by the fake account. Beat asked it’s listeners to request a call if ever contacted by Beat on social media and said they would happily call to prove it’s actually them. Something stations need to be aware of.

The shortlist for the IMRO Awards has been announced. The event takes place virtually again this year and will be held on the 1st of October. Good luck to everyone who made the shortlist.

The former head of RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, EDEL Ní Chuireáin. Retired this week after 39 years. EDEL has been managing the Donegal service since 2017. There’s a lovely article on this that’s well worth a read.

The death has been announced of Sunshine Radio founder Robbie Robinson aka Robbie Dale. Many have paid tribute to Robbie and there’s a good roundup on Radio Today. May he rest in peace

Christmas FM confirmed their 2021 charity partner this week. The station will be raising funds for Barnardos when it goes on air later this year. The station has been fairly active on social media recently so go check them out.
