2022 (It’s JNLR time Again)

Lots happens in the radio industry each week so here’s a summary of the week we just enjoyed.

Here’s What Happened

It’s that time again!!! This week we got the latest JNLR listenership numbers, so it’s time to see who’s up and who’s down.

Radio 1 has had a mixed bag this time around. Some shows are up, and some are down, it probably all equals out really. The good news for RTÉ here is really the weekend schedual where they have seen some very healthy growth.

It seems they’re having some issues with weekday afternoons, which we’ll discuss more in a minute, but first let’s look at the numbers.

Morning Ireland is up 14,000 for a very healthy 473,000 listeners, compared with 4,59,000 back in February
Tubridy has also gained listeners even if it is a smaller jump. He’s now at 3,69,000 compared to 366,000, a jump of 3,000
Claire Byrne has hit 350,000 listeners which is an increase of 4,000
LiveLine continues its decline, and it’s going fast too. Joe now stands at 332,000, that’s down another 11,000, bringing his total losses in the last 3 books to a huge 72,000
Ray Darcy is really not having a good time either as he now sits at 197,000. This is the slots lowest number since Ray took the slot in 2015, so surely serious questions are going to be asked here.
Thankfully for radio 1 the losses are just for the middle of the day, as drive time is up 1,000 to 216,000

So all in all a mixed bag. Head of Radio 1 Peter Woods spoke to the Irish Times about the numbers, and it’s clear that he has some concerns about the afternoons.

“We are not 100 per cent sure on the afternoons, but we have seen a drift off from the end of News at One, and that peters out at the end as well, It’s hard to see what is happening and it’s hard to see where those listeners are going.”

He also hinted that they’ll be taking a closer look at the situation after the next book in the autumn.

This could bring a lot of changes, but if this continues for another book I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ray getting replaced by the likes of Kathryn Thomas or Brendan O’Connor. Interesting times ahead.

Last time we spoke about 2FMs listener numbers, they’d just hired the 2 Johnnies, and a major TV campaign was on air promoting 2FM rising. It doesn’t seem like this has given 2FM any insane boost in listeners, but at the same time important shows are growing.

2FM breakfast now has 123,000 which is an increase of 9,000-12,000. The only major change to the show in the last while has been Clock Blockers, so maybe a chance to win €10,000 is bringing in new listeners. (Note, there seems to be two sets of numbers available here so there was obviously an error at some point, the show definitely has 123,000 listeners which is an increase, but the extent of the gains has some small variation across reports. We will update article once we establish the correct info.
Jennifer Zamparelli has 138,000 listeners which is down 3,000. It’s still an okay number though, not catastrophic.
Tracey is down 2,000 and now has 127,000 listeners. Again, not catastrophic but certainly not ideal.
The 2 Johnnies have 122,000 listeners which is a good place to start, it will be more interesting to look at this in autumn when we can start looking at trends

I think 2FM will be fun to watch over the next while as they seem to be at the start of a new strategy. It will probably take time before we see anything extremely interesting but these numbers will be useful to compare in autumn.

Newstalk is doing very well with most shows gaining listeners. Any losses are small and it doesn’t seem the station has any major downward trends. That said, a few numbers from their press release might throw people slightly. Instead of comparing book to book, they went from year to year. They were very transparent about this in fairness, but we’ll stick to going book by book so it’s easier to compare with other stations.

Newstalk Breakfast has reached 146,000, that’s up 8,000 from 138,000 back in February
Pat hasn’t budged, he’s still got 148,000 listeners which is the same as last book
Lunchtime live is down 3,000 and now sits at 111,000
Moncrieff now has 88,000 listeners that’s up 11,000. This is a good continuation of a recovery we first saw in the last book.
The hard shoulder is also up. The show gained 4,000 and now sits at 155,000

Really not bad. Newstalk only really had a miner drop with Lunchtime Live, and at least for now that’s not a trend. There is the risk of news exhaustion hurting the station slightly in the future but they seem to have avoided this for the most part so far.

Today FM have made changes recently and all seems relatively okay. They are still well ahead of 2FM and that looks unlikely to change anytime soon.

The problem is they have changed so much that any comparisons to previous books are basically irrelevant. For now we’re just going to share numbers without comparisons, and we’ll get more accurate trends in a few months time. All in all things seem healthy though.

Ian Dempsey has 201,000 listeners or as Today FM put it, more than 200,000
Dermot & Dave bring in 203,000 listeners. It will be interesting to see if they can stay above that 200,000 line
143,000 listen to Ray Foely. that’s a big jump for him after years at RedFM, so I’m sure he’s happy enough
Pamela Joyce is entertaining 134,000, as of now there’s 7,000 between her and Tracey over on 2FM so she’ll be trying hard to maintain that lead.
174,000 tune into Matt Cooper at drive time

Generally these are very healthy numbers, we’ll need to wait and see how things go over the next while but it doesn’t look like Bauer will be crying anytime soon.

Other stations

Unfortunately I’m not going to be able to cover every station as much as I’d love to. Here are links to a number of JNLR articles so you can hopefully find what your looking for.

I’d also recommend having a look at the JNLR hashtag on Twitter. some presenters share their numbers using that hashtag so it might be worth a look.

Overall everything seems to be remaining stable. For those of you who got good results congratulations, and for those who didn’t don’t be too hard on yourself. Every book tells a different story, so everyone will have another chance to impress in 3 months. Keep doing your best and you’ll do just fine.

In other news

TalkSport have secured Irish broadcast rights for the premier League. The new 3 year deal covers the 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons.

Talksport is available in the apps of all the Irish wireless group stations, and Irish coverage is usually produced from the 96FM studios in Cork. It will be interesting to see how the sports broadcast space evolves in Irish radio, as if Talksport or OTB took GAA radio rights for example things might change drastically.

For now though, Urban Media are selling sponsorship and advertising packages for the premier League coverage, trying to make some of the money back.

Finally this week, the BAI have announced a €2 million sound and vision round for Irish language projects.

This round is funded by the department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport, and Media, and is open to independent producers of television and radio projects.

In order to increase gender equality in the broadcast industry, this round requires that at least 50% of the actors or contributors on projects be women, and at least 50% of the creative team must be female also.

Any extra funding going into public service content production is a good thing for the industry, so hopefully we see more of this going forward.

The BAI point out that they will continue to allocate between 20% and 25% of funding towards Irish language projects in regular sound and vision rounds also, so we should certainly see and hear more Gaeilge on air over the next while.

The Irish language really gives you a great advantage in media, so I might need to re download Duolingo and get that skill back😂

This Week In Radio 12/2/2022 (with JNLR numbers and More)

Lots happens in the radio industry each week so here’s a summary of the week we just enjoyed.

Here’s what Happened

It’s JNLR time again, so we had a look to see who’s up and down. As usual, we’re only going to be able to cover the main stations but we’ll link to other coverage at the end.

Let’s start with Radio 1

Morning Ireland now has a huge 459,000 listeners each morning which is an increase of 9,000. While this is still good news, it’s worth noting that in Decembers numbers we did see a drop from 491,000 down to 450,000. They’re not there yet, but this might be the beginning of a recovery from the pandemic losses.
Same story with Tubridy. He’s up 7,000 listeners to 366,000, but he also suffered a big fall in the December book. Ryan went from 381,000 down to 359,000 in December, so while it’s an increase, recovery is still ongoing.
346,000 listeners tune in to Today with Claire Byrne on weekdays (+6,000) it seems the gains on radio 1 are quite consistent with changes of a few thousand on each show
Poor joe can’t get a break though. He’s still losing listeners. Liveline now has 343,000 this is down 3,000 from December.This really ain’t good when you consider joes losses in the last book, down from 404,000. When you put the last 2 books together, Liveline is down a huge 61,000

In general not a bad set of numbers for radio 1, but they still have a lot of listeners to gain back after Decembers big losses.

The story is much the same at 2FM

2FM didn’t have a great time back in December but things look to be recovering

2FM breakfast will be happy to know they didn’t fall under 100,000. Instead they gained 8,000 listeners, taking them from 103,000 to 111,000. The show is still down from the 126,000 that it had previously, but any gain is a good gain I suppose.
Jennifer Zamparelli has 141,000 listeners which is an extra 1,000. Another 11,000 would eliminate the losses from December so that’s reasonably possible in future books. 2FM has been advertised heavily on television recently so we’ll need to wait and see if this has much impact in the next few months.
Tracy Clifford now has 129,000 listeners which is also an increase of 1,000. Tracy lost just 2,000 in December so she’s still in a good position if the recovery continues.

With the extensive TV advertising, and the 2 Johnnies on the way. 2FM will be interesting to watch over the next while.

Today FM continue to perform well

Basically all shows on Today FM’s weekday schedule are up, and because they also had a good run in December they’re not facing the same recovery struggle as RTÉ.

Ian Dempsey now has a listenership of 184,000 which is an increase of 6,000 from December. He lost 1,000 back in the last book so he’s gained 5,000 over the last 2 reports.
Dermot & Dave are also up. They’ve gained 3,000 listeners and now have 208,000 listeners
Matt Cooper is also doing fine in drive time bringing in an extra 3,000 listeners for a total of 173,000

Most of the other shows on Today FM are changing so we’ll need to wait and see how they perform going forward.

What’s the news with Newstalk?

Basically everything’s going grand. Newstalk hasn’t had any huge gains or losses, but in general they’re still gaining a few listeners around the schedule.

Newstalk Breakfast gained 1,000 listeners since December and now has 138,000 tuning in.
Pat Kenny also gained 1,000 and his total is now 184,000.
Lunchtime Live with Andrea Gilligan has 114,000 Listeners, that’s a gain of 2,000. Why gain 1,000 when you can gain 2,000?
Moncrieff has 77,000 Listeners, that’s also up 1,000 since December. A real trend emerging here. The show still has a bit of recovering to do though, it suffered a loss of 20,000 in December. If you take in the last 2 books, your still down 19,000
The Hard Shoulder with Kieran Cuddihy had a nice increase of 5,000 and now has a total of 151,000 listeners

In other news

the department for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media told Radio Land this week that an Irish music quota is not being considered for Irish radio stations. This was part of a deep dive we published on Wednesday asking if there should be a quota in Ireland like those seen in Canada and France.

There are a number of legal and other factors which must be taken into account when considering the feasibility of introducing airplay quotas. The potential benefit to music production in Ireland must be balanced with the rights of broadcasters, subject to their contractual or regulatory obligations, to determine the type of content they wish to broadcast and to ensure commercial revenue particularly in the context of the current media climate. Importantly, the introduction of airplay quotas would need to be consistent with EU law. A quota for music produced in a particular Member State would be considered to restrict free movement of services by placing music produced in other Member States at a disadvantage. Given the legal challenges arising, the Government is not currently considering airplay quotas based on production location.

Finally this week, Radiocentre Ireland has become a founding member of the World Radio Alliance. The new organisation will aim to promote radio’s marketing power, and hopefully increase revenue in the industry.

This Week In Radio 1/1/2022

Because we took a break last week, here’s a summary of stories from the time we were away📻

Here’s what happened

RedFM’s Izzy Showbizzy announced in an Instagram post that she’s stepping down from her evening slot on the station. Izzy will remain with RedFM as a presenter on the weekend schedule but she’s exploring other media opportunities now as well.

It was such a hard decision to make but my work life, like the rest of us, has changed ALOT in the past year which has opened up new opportunities in all medias, all of which I will be pursuing. I’ll also be joining The ECHO team and getting involved with my fitness career. So basically, what I’m trying to say is (if you’re still with me is) that I’m trying to do it ALL!! 😂😂and why not?

Joe Duffy has got a new number. Like many stations LiveLine is switching to a 0818 number. the new number to talk to Joe is 0818 715 815
A six part health and well-being series hosted by Anna Geary on RTÉ Radio 1 starts January 9th. The new show is called supercharged.
2FM rising is back for 2022, a new set of artist’s will take part in the project from the 17th of January.
The RTÉ Choice music prize is also making a return in 2022

The Big Radio Land Review Of The Year

It’s nearly 2022. How did that happen so fast? It feels like 2021 went like a rocket but Believe it or not, a lot of radio stuff happened this year.

In this post we’ll take a look back at the biggest radio stories from each month of the year and reflect on what a crazy time it’s been for our little industry.

Let’s begin with January, anyone fancy a bit of networking?

A new year and a new networked show, 96FM and Live95 began networking there evening show back in January. When reporting on the story at the time all we had was a job listing but Shane bucks quickly brought the networked show to reality,

It’s February, or should I say Februar, that’s February in German

It feels like forever ago but bauers deal to buy Communicorp was done in February this year. This is still an ongoing story as we will likely see more changes in 2022, but it all began back in February of this year.

The third month was March, you know by swapping around those letters you can make the word charm?

Classic hits and Nova announced in March that they would be swapping breakfast shows. Classic hits listeners universally didn’t approve of this and things went quiet for a while, but the swap took effect in April and has remained since.

In April it was decided that Dublin no longer talks

The 98FM show Dublin Talks was replaced with a music show this month. the shows presenter’s Adrian Kennedy and Jeremy Dixon have since moved on to new projects. We’ll still need to wait and see if Bauer make more of these decisions in 2022, but its certainly an interesting one to watch.

Nobody was making money in may

Wireless group announced a loss of €7 million in may, with their accounts giving us a few interesting insights. All we can really do is hope that stuff stabilises financially in the next while as it’s a tough time for the industry.

2FM also prepared to launch their new breakfast show back in may, crazy to think it’s been on air for months already.

We’re very very sorry, but it’s june

FM104 apologised in june after making fun of a child in their kids in the car segment. an important reminder to treat others like you’d like to be treated.

It’s July, and nobodies watching the road!

AA Roadwatch ended traffic reports for radio in July. it’s a shame that such a valuable public service was discontinued as it seems now many more stations are just relying on listeners for traffic updates. Call or text when safe to do so I suppose.

Surely this is an area some insurance company or car manufacturer could help out with? It’s insane that some stations are now without traffic updates, what a world.

We got some really interesting numbers back in august about staff pay at RTÉ. It’ll be interesting to see if those wages hold in the years to come as budget cuts sadly seem inevitable.

It was a month of awards and rebrands in October

October also saw the announcement that Choose Radio was to become Radiocentre. We have yet to see any big news from Radiocentre since rebranding so this is certainly worth keeping an eye on in the new year.

It was made clear how tough it’s been for stations in November

In November, The Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media was told by John Purcell just how hard the pandemic has been on radio stations.

He said among other things that some stations were at times just a week away from shutting down. A scary thought considering how important radio is to people during the pandemic.

This really shows just how important funding from the likes of sound and vision can be in keeping stations on air.

Finally came December, the month of Christmas, but more importantly JNLR numbers

It took a while but they finally came. We got new JNLR numbers in December after a long pandemic induced break. it wasn’t a great time for RTÉ but in general most stations seemed happy.

I’ll personally be really interested to see how networked shows perform in 2022 as well as seeing if 2FM make any changes following their drop in listeners. So much to look forward to.

This Week In Radio 11/12/2021 (with loads of JNLR numbers)

Lots happens in the radio industry each week so here’s a summary of the week we just enjoyed.

Here’s what happened

We got a new set of JNLR figure’s this week and there were some interesting stats hidden among all the numbers.

unfortunately, stations haven’t generally made raw data available so there’s a lot of different sources getting used. For each stat below, the corresponding source is provided. Feel free to go through all the sources in order to get a bigger picture.

It wasn’t a great day for the team at 2FM Breakfast. According to Goss, 2FM breakfast has dropped from 126,000 listeners to 103,000. This puts them close to dipping below 100,000. There have been a lot of recent changes to this show but if this trend doesn’t reverse more changes may need to be considered. (Source)
While not as big a drop, the same article tells us that the Jennifer Zamparelli Show has also lost listeners. The show has fallen from 152,000 to 140,000. This is a drop of 12,000 compared to the 23,000 lost on breakfast. This suggests that part of the loss is emanating from the weaker breakfast performance. (Source)
While Tracy Clifford has also lost listeners, the drop isn’t nearly as severe. Again according to Goss, the show is down from 130,000 to 128,000. A loss of just 2,000. (Source)
Defying the odds on weekdays though, fair play to Jenny Greene. her drivetime show has increased from 113,000 to 122,000. An increase of a very respectable 9,000 listeners. (Same source again)

2FM also lost listeners to some weekend shows. The Goss Article has also done a great job at providing those so check them out here

Things might not have been great on 2fm but Radio 1 also had a bad day. Thanks again to Goss for providing way more detail than the RTÉ press release.

491,000 became 450,000 at morning Ireland. While the show is still irelands biggest, that’s a serious drop. (Source)
Tubridy lost listeners too with his show dropping from 381,000 to 359,000. (Same Source)
Some people must have missed joe telling them to wash there hands as LiveLine lost a huge chunk of listeners. The show is down from 404,000 to 346,000. That’s a drop of 58,000 listeners. (It’s same source again)

Today FM were happy with there results as they are now Ireland’s 2nd biggest station.

Ian Dempsey now has 178,000 listeners. Today FM tried to hide it, but this is down 1,000from last year. (Source One, Today FM) and (source Two, The Journal)
Dermot & Dave are up 22,000 listeners to 205,000 (Source)
The Last Word has gained 18,000 listeners with the show now having 170,000 listeners. (Source)

The station also had a good performance at weekend’s which they’ll tell you about on their website here

As for Newstalk, they did relatively okay even though some shows did have big losses.

Newstalk Breakfast had a good year and are now up 17,000 for a total listenership of 137,000 (source)
Pat Kenny has had a very nice jump in listeners as he’s now got 183,000. That’s up 28,000 from last year (Source)
Lunchtime Live is also seeing gains with an extra 10,000 listeners.That show now has a total of (112,000 listeners (Source)
There were big losses as well on the Newstalk schedule though as there are now 20,000 less people tuning into Moncrieff with a total of 76,000 (source)
It’s even worse at The Hard Shoulder which has lost 31,000 listeners and now stands at a total of 146,000. Still a respectable number but certainly not ideal (Source)

The station had some nice gains on weekends too and The Journal do a great job covering those. Check them out here

Outside of individual station performances the interesting stat for me was that 450,000 people listen to radio on a digital device daily. That will be an interesting stat to watch going forward as more people get smart speakers and similar devices. (Source)
